The Movie Show Podcast #39 - Back To The Future
![]()
“Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.”
I recently pulled out Bob Zemeckis’ 1985 classic “Back To The Future” to show my kids. They were reluctant at first but really got into it and it was a joy to watch their tiny minds being dazzled by the concept of time travel. So I did some research about the film and thought I’d share some of the highlights with you.
On the show you will discover:
-
Who was first cast to play Marty McFly, and shot a whole month of footage, before being sacked and replaced with Michael J Fox?
-
Which dumb-ass studio executive wanted to call the film “Spaceman From Pluto” because he didn’t think anyone would want to see a film with the word “future” in the title?
Did John De Lorean really get busted for cocaine trafficking?
And a whole lot more.
Of course the most interesting question is - What if Michael J Fox had had a real time machine back in 1985 and could have jumped 20 years to see his own real future?? Would he have still made “Doc Hollywood”?

I love BTTF, but not as much as BTTF II, which literally runs rings around it. I can’t help but love any movie as needlessly, gloriously complicated as that one.
Did you know that the first draft of BTTF II incorporated both sequels, and had they gone with Bob Gale’s original idea the final part would have taken place not in the old west but in the late sixties? The draft itself isn’t that funny but the idea is way better.

Thank you for a great detailed reminder of why I love this trilogy. I have it on DVD and rewatch once in a while. Once of my favourite lines from the series is when the doc says “Marty, you’re not thinking fourth dimensionally!”

Yeah I think you’re right. BTTF2 is where it really becomes a mind bender. I’ve been watching that today with the boys and I have to stop it every five minutes to explain what the hell is going on. They are confused by loving it! And that’s the sign of a good film. :-)
It’s hard for 6 year olds to think fourth dimensionally!
