“LITTLE FISH” - a film worth watching
Last night we went to see LITTLE FISH, a new Aussie film that I hadn’t heard of and only ended up seeing because there was nothing else on. Directed by Rowan Woods (you’ve never heard of him, unless you’re a fan of that dreadful sci-fi show FARSCAPE), and starring a great Aussie cast, including:
.
Check out the trailer here. It doesn’t do the film justice though.
Here’s a quick list of things that stood out for me:
- Hugo Weaving’s performance - christ, this guy can create characters. From Agent Smith to Elrond to Lionel? No fucking way.
- Cate Blanchett - she has the world at her feet and she makes this small, hard, gritty AUSSIE film.
- The Vietnamese cast, including American Dustin Nguyen. Dustin pulls off a pretty convincing Aussie accent, tinged with American and Vietnamese. Remember him from 21 JUMP STREET? Great to see an Aussie films with a heavy Viet cast.
- The kids choir singing “Flame Trees”. Very moving stuff. Why didn’t I get to do songs like that when I sung in school choirs?
Go see this film. It’ll probably disappear due to a lack of marketing budget, but it is one Aussie film that deserves your money and a shot at the Oscar’s for several of the cast and crew. Expect to see Rowan Woods snapped up by Hollywood after this. Let’s hope he doesn’t waste his talents making shitty big budget summer blockbusters. Speaking of which, did anyone bother to see STEALTH?

“Aussie cast”? Sam Neill, Joel Tobeck, Martin Henderson, and, lest we forget, Bic Runga, cough cough.
