The Movie Show #14 - ANY GIVEN SUNDAY
The Movie Show #14 (MP3 - 19MB - 54min)
A special show today - today is the first time I’ve invited a listener onto the show to review his favourite film with me.
William H Johnson III - known to his friends as UnforgivenSpaceCowboy, lives in Phoenix, Arizona, and took the trouble to send me a LENGTHY email review of his favourite film, ANY GIVEN SUNDAY, suggesting I might want to talk about it on the show one day. I said “Hey - I can do better than that - why the hell don’t YOU get yo’ ass on the show and review it with me?!”
And he said yes and I said cool and here is the final result.
Please tell me if you like the idea of having you guys come on the show and, if you do, we’ll do it regularly!
For those of you that aren’t familiar with the film, ANY GIVEN SUNDAY is Oliver Stone’s 1999 ranting and ravings on the goodness and the badness of the pro-football scene in America. It stars AL PACINO, CAMERON DIAZ, JAMIE FOXX, JAMES WOODS, LL COOL J and DENNIS QUAID.

I’ve enjoyed the Movie Show episodes I’ve listened to so far, including this one. I may be biased, as Will is my boyfriend. I’m glad he talked someone else’s ear off about movies for a change. Keep up the great work. Your show fucking cracks me up.
PS: I’m sure Will would be embarrassed if he knew I was writing this, but I just couldn’t resist.

Molly - man, you are rough. I’m taking you off my xmas list.
Lauren - I loved having Will on! If you don’t appreciate the man’s movie sense, you and my wife should get together! Glad you like the show!

You mean I don’t get my TPN Mug? D’oh! Oh well, I will put that down with the AFL Show Shirt I never got and the Golf show stuff I never got!
But seriously, just a bit of harmless fun! You have to admitt that the change of format (having a guest reviewer) is very much a “Jumping the Shark” type behaviour.
Molly
PS. And How come all your co-hosts leave you? (hehe)

They don’t leave me, I’m just the only bugger who keeps turning up! Cuz I do it for the lerrrrve.
As for your shirts… I’m sorry about that and I’ll slap the hosts for you.

Love the show Cameron and whoever else manages to show up. Although i do worry you will now get endless lengthy emails from people that really believe they know films and just want to get on as a guest reviewer. I’m preparing my very own about Jersey Girl…
Can’t agree more about Any Given Sunday. This is by far one of my favourite films, let alone sports films. Although I do confess to the guilty pleasure of enjoying American Football quite alot.
Thought i’d make a comment on Heat, as you did discuss it in the podcast. I managed to last up until the other week having never seen the entirity of Heat. Many would of course consider this a sin (Forgive the fact that the next day i finally watched Citezan Kane for the first time. Really, i have seen quite a lot of movies, but just hadn’t seen these two. Loved Kane immensely btw.) However i finally succumbed to peer pressure (impressive as a 26yo) and sat down to watch it.
I couldn’t stand it. I honestly believe this to be possibly the most overatred film i’ve ever seen. Whilst I enjoy Mann’s directing usually (Collatoral and Ali) i found his lengthy approach and meaningless slowless irritating in the extreme. The simple existance of characters whose only job, after spending 15 minutes on their backstory, is to die in unimaginative ways, bored the crap out of me.
I did however enjoy Pacino in that frenetic type of role. And i’ve got to say he was the only one i did enjoy. Plus i thought the whole relationship with him and De Nero completely unbelieveable.
Anyway, I love the show, and happy to have gotten that off my chest.
Will be happy to write you a 25 page email on it if you like…
;-)
